February TVGuide – Magazine scan with Huddy
Question: House scoop? —Crystal
Ausiello: The POTW in Monday’s episode is none other than Cuddy’s mom (a.k.a. Candice Bergen). But that’s not the interesting part. This is the interesting part: Taub and Martha discover a skeleton (or two) in her closet when they canvas her home looking for medical clues, and one of ‘em is pretty juicy. As the case evolves, House puts Cuddy in the worst possible position, compelling her to go along with one of his most extreme (read: crazy-unethical) plans ever. Meanwhile, facing divorce and hurting for cash, Taub considers a job offer.

FAMILY TIES CAUSE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST ON AN ALL-NEW “HOUSE” MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7, ON FOX
Candice Bergen (“Boston Legal”) and Paula Marshall (“Gary Unmarried”) Guest-Star
Cuddy’s mother, Arlene (guest star Bergen), is admitted to Princeton Plansboro after complaining about unusual symptoms, but stubborn Arlene insists that House be removed from the case, forcing House to come up with non-conventional – and illegal – means to treat his patient. House instructs his team to follow his lead, and they discover details in Arlene’s personal life that she kept secret from Cuddy and her sister Lucinda (guest star Marshall). Meanwhile, Taub’s ex-wife, Rachel, puts him in contact with her brother who hires Taub to work a job on the side in exchange for much-needed income, which winds up taking a physical and emotional toll on him. Later, Cuddy places her trust in House to ensure that her mother receives the proper medical treatment, leading “by the book” medical student Masters to reevaluate her responsibility to practice within a code of ethics and to follow her boss’ orders in the all-new “Family Practice” episode of HOUSE airing Thursday, Feb. 7 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (HOU-713) (TV-14)

When Dr. House meets Arlene Cuddy (Candice Bergen) on House’s January 17 episode, he thinks he’s treating just another hypochondriac — unaware that his patient is the mother of his girlfriend, Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein).
“He’s on the cusp of losing it,” says Candice, who describes Arlene as “a gentile who would prefer to be a Jew. She considers House a goy unable to commit to her daughter.” Oy! Adds exec producer David Shore, “Arlene’s a tough-as-nails woman who’s very hard on Cuddy. They love each other, but boy, do they drive each other crazy.”
The family reunion continues on February 21, when Candice returns along with Lisa’s sister, Lucinda (Paula Marshall). “Lucinda is the good daughter, ” says Candice. Despite all these Cuddys converging in Princeton to meet the new man, Shore says fans shouldn’t get their hopes up for an engagement. At least “not yet,” he adds, refusing to confirm if Huddy will even remain coupled through the season.
Lisa Edelstein and Hugh Laurie, House
We are fans of simmering sexual tension, so when Cuddy (Edelstein) and House (Laurie) decided to finally have a go at it in last season’s finale, we were skeptical. Interestingly though, their relationship is more familiar than the typical TV coupling. While Cuddy weighs how to tell their colleagues, House struggles with surrogate fatherhood when he has to baby-sit Cuddy’s daughter Rachel. Their chemistry is still white-hot, but their interactions have the stuff of longevity.
Seems everyone in the Cuddy family wants to meet the good doctor’s boyfriend. Wouldn’t you? Following news that Candice Bergen will arrive on House in January as Cuddy’s mom, Arlene, comes word that actress Paula Marshall has just been cast as Cuddy’s sister, Lucinda.
“Cuddy’s in a relationship now and the boyfriend’s meeting the family,” explains executive producer David Shore, who hints at some secrecy involving Lucinda’s presence. Paula, a familiar face on TV since the mid ’90s, is probably best known for her roles on Gary Unmarried, Californication and Nip/Tuck. She is also expected to arrive in January.
As for as-yet-unseen members of Dr. House’s family paying a visit — like Mr. Grumpy’s biological father — Shore says “that’s something we talk about on a regular basis,” but nothing’s on the map just yet.
So what do you think of Paula as the TV sister of Lisa Edelstein? Do you see a resemblance?
